MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican rebel leader Subcomandante Marcos says he's withdrawing as spokesman for the Zapatista movement, but archly suggests he may just be changing his name.

Marcos signs his latest statement on the rebels' website "Subcomandante Galeano," in honor of a rebel stalwart recently killed in a clash with a rival Indian farm group.

Marcos says, in his words, "I declare that Subcomandante Marcos ceases to exist ... through my voice he will no longer speak for the Zapatista National Liberation Army."

It's unclear whether the statement posted Sunday means he will continue to speak under the name "Galeano."

Marcos is known for speaking in allegories and frequently has disappeared from public view for years at a time, ever since the Zapatistas staged a brief uprising in 1994 for greater Indian rights.
