Battered dog tossed in trash bin
A badly injured dog was found inside a trash bin in Southeast D.C., and the Washington Humane Society is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.
A woman was throwing out her garbage at an apartment on Ninth Street Friday when she discovered the pit bull. Someone had wrapped the dog in a plastic bag and closed it with duct tape, but the dog had chewed and clawed her way through the plastic, humane society organizers said. The dog, since named “Trooper,” was bloodied and appeared to have been in an illegal dogfight, organizers said. She remains in intensive care at an animal hospital.
Two charged in Briggs Chaney shooting
Two men were charged in the shooting last month at the Briggs Chaney Shopping Plaza in Silver Spring.
Police said Deon E. Sherrod, 29, and George Emanuel Bleau, 31, shot at each other outside the Chuck E. Cheese, and a stray bullet hit and wounded a bystander. Bleau is being held on $1 million, and Sherrod is being held without bond.
Driver in fatal crash arrested for DUI
A Hyattsville man was arrested in a crash that killed a Capitol Heights woman.
Around 6 p.m. Saturday, police said, Erik A. Bingham, 34, was driving a 2001 Ford Mustang at a high speed in the 1300 block of Kenilworth Avenue, when it slammed into a concrete barrier, tossing 28-year-old Diona S. Anthony from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Bingham was charged with driving under the influence. The investigation is continuing.
D.C. man admits to $3.8 million scam
A D.C. businessman pleaded guilty to a mortgage scheme that netted more than $3.8 million in ill-gotten funds.
Osman Sharrieff Al-Bari, 35, admitted to paying straw purchasers $10,000 each and falsifying loan applications to buy houses in the District, Maryland and Virginia.
Al-Bari faces up to 30 years. Timothy Reed, 44, of Beltsville, Terrence White, 36, of Oxon Hill, Sabrina Weinberg, 44, and Kara McIntosh, 47, both of Bethesda, all pleaded guilty in connection to the scheme.
