The NFL suspended Redskins corner Phillip Buchanon for the first four games of the season, coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday morning.Shanahan would not say why Buchanon was suspended and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is declining comment.
But a four-game suspension would be typical of a positive test for a performance-enhancing drug.
Shanahan would only say that the positive test “came down a while back.”
The Redskins re-signed Buchanon Monday night, knowing that the suspension would take place.
“That’s a little setback for us,” Shanahan said.
A message left for Buchanon’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was not immediately returned. But Buchanon’s publicist sent a statement to the Associated Press.
“I’m excited to return to the Washington Redskins and continue to be part of this great organization,” Buchanon said in the statement. “I look forward to putting the suspension behind me, returning to the field and helping my team.”
