Matthew Perry, the actor best known for playing wise-cracking Chandler Bing in Friends, has died age 54 after drowning at a home in Los Angeles, according to reports.
The actor, who had long battled addiction to drugs and alcohol, was reportedly found in a jacuzzi at the home, according to TMZ. First responders were sent to the home on a call for cardiac arrest, the outlet said.

Perry had recently posted a photo to his Instagram of himself in a hot tub, though it is unclear if it is the same one he was found in. .
In May 2021, Perry appeared for a Friends reunion, but concerned fans with his slurred speech. He would later reveal he had become newly sober, and maintained he was still sober in October of last year. Perry blamed his slurred speech on a dental procedure he’d had done days before.
Last year, Perry published “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir” his own autobiography detailing his struggles behind the scenes. While he would win one Emmy nominee for his role in Friends, and four other Emmy’s in other programs, Perry lamented that fans could easily tell what drug he was hooked on based on his weight at various times. According to Perry, several cast members on Friends confronted him about his addiction.
The actor visited rehabilitation centers over a dozen times in his lifetime.

Perry’s final casting was as Ted Kennedy in the series The Kennedys After Camelot. The actor was cast in 2021’s Don’t Look Up but pulled out due to a health concern. In his memoir, he claims his heart stopped during back surgery.
