The communications director for a freshman Republican congresswoman resigned following the Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
Ben Goldey resigned from his role in Rep. Lauren Boebert’s office less than two weeks after the congresswoman was sworn in, according to Axios.
“Following the events of January 6th, I’ve decided to part ways with the office,” he said in a statement. “I wish her and the people of Colorado’s Third District the best.”
Despite her short tenure in Congress, Boebert has made a handful of headlines already, notably with her decision to carry her firearm around the Capitol.
“I refuse to give up my Second Amendment rights,” Boebert said recently as Democrats sought to prevent her from carrying her weapon. “I’m a 5-foot tall, 100-pound mom with four children and will be walking to work and serving in one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. I choose to defend my family and my life with all of the force the Constitution provides. I will not let a bunch of gun-grabbing House Democrats take away my Constitutional right to protect myself.”
Boebert, the owner of a gun-themed restaurant called Shooters Grill in Rifle, Colorado, where wait staff openly carry firearms as they serve customers, won her general election contest against Diane Mitsch Bush, a Democratic member of the Colorado House of Representatives, to represent the state’s 3rd Congressional District.
The first-term congresswoman, who has repeated election conspiracy theories and has been tied to the QAnon conspiracy theory, objected to President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victory on Jan. 6.
“Madame Speaker, I have constituents outside this building right now. I promised my voters to be their voice,” Boebert said on the House floor, objecting to the counting of Arizona’s Electoral College votes. “Are we not a government, of, by, and for the people? They know that this election was not right, and as their representative, I am sent here to represent them. I will not allow the people to be ignored.”
Some Democrats have alleged that GOP members of Congress provided tours to the mostly Trump-supporting crowd that stormed the Capitol as Congress sought to certify Biden’s victory. Boebert, in particular, has faced criticism for tweeting a message saying that Speaker Nancy Pelosi had been removed from the chambers.
