On this day, Feb. 29, in 2000, a 6-year-old boy near Flint, Mich., brought a gun to school and killed his first-grade classmate Kayla Rolland.
The child found a .32-caliber handgun in a shoebox in his 19-year-old uncle’s bedroom. Police say the child took the gun to school and shot Kayla at point-blank range.
The boy hid the semiautomatic handgun and fled to a restroom. He is believed to be the youngest school shooter in history.
The boy was not charged because Michigan law says children younger than 7 cannot form criminal intent.
His uncle, Jamelle James, pleaded to involuntary manslaughter and spent 2 years and 5 months in prison.
