Judge ends conservatorship controlling life of Britney Spears for nearly 14 years

A Los Angeles judge on Friday ended pop singer Britney Spears’s conservatorship that had control over her life for nearly 14 years.

“As of today, the conservatorship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is hereby terminated,” Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny said, according to the Associated Press.

Spears, 39, was put under a conservatorship in 2008 after a public meltdown, including shaving her head, overseen by her father.

In recent years, she has pushed for an end to the arrangement and has been boosted in the public by a growing “Free Britney” movement.

“Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy … !!! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day !!!! Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen,” Spears said in a tweet.

In June, the singer testified to a Los Angeles Court, alleging she had been held against her will in a psychiatric institution and denied agency over several aspects of her life. Spears demanded the conservatorship, which she called “abusive,” end without any prying evaluation of her mental state.

The judge allowed Spears to hire Mathew Rosengart to serve as her attorney in July.

Spears’s father, Jamie Spears, had requested on Nov. 1 an immediate end to the pop star’s conservatorship. His lawyer released a statement revealing her father “has no interest in the conservatorship continuing.”

Rosengart has promised to pursue an investigation into the elder Spears’s role in the conservatorship, saying he and his team have found mismanagement of Britney Spears’s finances.

The pursuit to end Spears’s conservatorship led to a Senate committee hearing to examine the practice of conservatorships and their implications for individual rights on Sept. 28.

Sens. Susan Collins and Bob Casey introduced the Guardianship Accountability Act, which would provide federal grants for states to track information about conservatorships in their states.

Britney Spears, who has two children, announced her engagement with longtime boyfriend Sam Asghari on Sept. 12.
