Paul Ryan backs Robert Mueller after Trump tweets: ‘Mr. Mueller and his team should be able to do their job’

House Speaker Paul Ryan reiterated his support for special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation on Sunday after President Trump targeting the probe in a series of tweets over the weekend.

“As the speaker has always said, Mr. Mueller and his team should be able to do their job,” Ryan spokesperson AshLee Strong told the Washington Examiner.

Trump on Sunday questioned the biases of Mueller’s investigative team which is looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump also attacked Muellers investigation on Saturday, tweeting that the federal inquiry into whether his campaign colluded with Russia to influence the election “should never have started.”

The tweets come days after Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe less than 48 hours before his retirement. McCabe claims he was fired as part of a larger plan to dismantle Mueller’s investigation.
