August recess typically offers a prime time for party leaders to barnstorm the country in support of their candidates in battleground races.

But Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have had a quiet recess amid discontent from their respective bases.
