Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) has imposed America’s first statewide moratorium on new large data centers. Democrats in Congress are now calling for Washington to follow her lead, including demands for a national pause on new artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Their position is crystallizing: when data centers create political controversy, do not produce more electricity, modernize the grid, or establish predictable rules. Just stop building.
