Timing is perfect for Trump to use immigration to peel black voters from Democrats

The story also quotes Keneshia Grant, a political science professor at Howard University in Washington. “Before, black folks were like, ‘We have to cross this bridge. Barack over everything,’” she said. “But for some portion of the black electorate, Barack Obama did not deliver what he was expected to deliver.” She added that blacks would now be “holding the next black candidate to a higher standard — not just ‘are you black,’ but ‘what is that blackness going to get me?’”

This is what a significant number of blacks are saying and thinking despite having two black senators running for the Democratic nomination; an entire national news media that calls Trump a racist every two minutes; and a current president who hasn’t made any direct appeals to black voters since August 2016 when he told them as a candidate, “What the hell do you have to lose? Give me a chance.”

Trump’s national approval rating with blacks stands at 15%, according to a March survey by YouGov. A Rassmussen-HarrisX poll from his month gave the same result. That’s not very good, and yet Trump won in 2016 with just 8% of the black vote.

Despite just making up 13% of the overall population, blacks are a must-win constituency for Democrats. Not only must they win, but they need the votes of 85% to 90% of black voters to be competitive in any national election. A crack in that, even just a crack of eight points, could be catastrophic to the 2020 Democratic nominee.

The economy is strong. Black unemployment is at a historic low. Democrats are busying themselves with late-term abortions, Trump’s tax papers and freeing up public toilets for transsexuals.

What’s a winning issue for Trump among black voters? Immigration.

A January 2018 Harvard-Harris poll said that more than half of registered black voters, 54%, believed immigrants legally admitted into the United States should number between none and “less than 250,000” per year. Admittance right now is 1 million per year. That’s only the legal ones, which are still largely low-skilled workers, and the number doesn’t take into account the illegal immigrants flowing in, virtually all of which are low-skilled.

These people, admitted into the country under policies championed by Democrats and ignored by Republicans, directly compete with blacks for what would otherwise be decent-paying jobs, as data show that immigrants, illegal or not, tend to populate the same areas where black populations are concentrated — big cities and the Southeast in particular. Employers then exploit the influx of new, cheap labor and pay as little as possible to immigrants who are nonetheless still set to make more than what they would get in their home countries.

Democrats’ message to blacks goes something like, “Sorry you lost that job to a Guatemalan, but will you join the effort to make sure you can use whatever public restroom you’re in the mood for? And by the way, is it in your heart to sign this petition opposing the president’s racist immigration policies so that more people can come and take the job you’d work for a legal market wage?”

Remember what Ryan Boyer from earlier said: “I think a lot of black people say they picked Obama and the gay community benefited. The Latino community benefited, but not really the black community.” If Trump were smart, he’d accept this gift from God. (The real one, not the one Pete Buttigieg keeps name-dropping).

The more likely scenario is that Trump delegates Jared Kushner to head a commission that eventually presents a meaningless report before declaring it a win. But if he’s interested in a winning campaign issue, and in making history with black Americans, there will never be a better time for Trump to attract them from the Democratic Party. Appealing to black voters on immigration is the way to do it.
