A U.S. military aircraft has crashed in Norway while participating in a NATO exercise.
Four people were aboard the aircraft, a Marine Corps V-22 Osprey, when it went missing Friday in poor weather conditions over rough terrain, the Norwegian Armed Forces said in a statement.

“We found it after an emergency signal was received,” a spokesperson for Norway’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centres told Reuters. “Because of the bad weather, we cannot get down. Police and rescue services are on their way.”
Officials said the status of the four individuals aboard the aircraft is unknown. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The aircraft was being used for NATO’s cold response exercises in Norway in which NATO forces test their ability to navigate cold weather conditions, including on the ground, in the sky, and at sea. The exercises will continue through April, according to NATO.

The Department of Defense confirmed the incident to the Washington Examiner. The Marine Corps also released a statement on Twitter confirming the incident.
V-22s combine the “vertical performance of a helicopter with the speed and range of a fixed-wing aircraft,” according to Boeing, which manufactures the aircraft.
We can confirm an incident has occurred involving a Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey aircraft.
The aircraft was conducting training in Norway as part of Exercise COLD RESPONSE 22 at the time of the incident.
