As Republican nominee Donald Trump ramps up his fundraising efforts, conservative writer George Will is calling on top party donors to keep their wallets shut.
In his latest column, Will said GOP loyalists and donors should disown the celebrity businessman who is now the party’s de facto leader.
“Trump’s campaign has less cash ($1.3 million) than some congressional candidates have, so Republican donors have never been more important than they are at this moment,” Will wrote Wednesday night. “They can save their party by not aiding its nominee.”
He accused Trump of being far less wealthy than he claims — Trump estimates he is worth $10 billion — and said that is proven by his so-far refusal to release any of his tax returns.
“It is reasonable to assume that the returns would refute many of his assertions about his net worth, his charitableness and his supposed business wizardry,” said Will. “They might also reveal some awkwardly small tax payments.”
Will has long been a critic of Trump’s and Trump has often publicly mocked him as a “dumb guy” with glasses.
