The Redskins clearly weren’t pleased with their interior depth, selecting a second player who can play both center and guard. This time it’s Iowa’s Adam Gettis, who played both left and right guard at Iowa.
Washington selected Gettis in the fifth round, the 141st pick overall.
Here’s a scouting report on him from the Sporting News. In Pro Football Weekly’s draft guide, their summary of him was this: “An undersized, competitive, athletic one-year starter who played his way into draft consideration as a senior. Showed well against top competition and should continue improving with increased strength development. Would be best in a zone scheme.”
Gettis said all he played at Iowa was a zone scheme. At 6-foot-2, 293 pounds he’s a little small for an interior lineman, but coach Mike Shanahan often has favored lighter linemen because of their ability to move quicker.
“I’d say it’s a perfect [fit],” Gettis said. “It could be an easy transition.”
Gettis said teams also talked to him during the pre-draft process about playing center. He was a backup center at Iowa, but never played the position in a game.
He started 13 games this past season. He missed six games in 2010 because of two ankle injuries. Gettis is considered a strong competitor.
“That’s what football is all about,” he said, “just getting after people, working hard and putting guys on the ground and getting up and doing it again.”
Washington selected SMU guard/center Josh LeRibeus in the third round. Kory Lichtensteiger is coming off a torn ACL, but coach Mike Shanahan considers him their best run blocker. Backups Maurice Hurt and Erik Cook have not distinguished themselves.
